Established in 1974 as Department of Pharmacy, it was upgraded to the status of a college in 1981 and named University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences.  It is recognized as one of the best Pharmacy Colleges in India and enjoys worldwide recognition in the field of pharmacy education and research.  Currently, B. Pharm. and M. Pharm. with six specializations viz., Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry courses are offered in the college besides Ph.D. and Post Doctoral studies.  Since the introduction of Ph.D. programme, more than 200 candidates were awarded with Ph.D. Degree. The State Government honoured 7 (seven) of the faculty members with Best Teacher Awards.  Several other prestigious awards including     Dr. Manjusree Pal memorial Award, G.P. Srivastava award, M.L. Khorana Memorial Award and State Council for Science & Technology Award etc., were received by the faculty.    Most of the faculty have visited several reputed laboratories in USA, Germany, Austria, UK, Italy and New Zealand on Post-Doctoral / Research programmes.  Further,  several faculty members worked as Professors in foreign universities such as  Ethiopia, Libya and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  Prestigious international fellowships like BOYSCOST, UNESCO, DAAD, AvHumbolt, CV Raman etc, were awarded to several of the faculty to pursue their Post-Doctoral / Research studies.

Faculty of the college have extensively worked and published on different areas viz.,  Natural Product Isolation, Transdermal Drug Delivery, Mucoadhesive Patches, Drug targeting and colloidal drug delivery,  Molecular Modeling, Novel Synthetic Methodologies, Secondary Metabolite Production from Plant Tissue Culture and Microbes, Isolation of Antibiotics from Soil Microbes, Cancer Biology, Screening of Herbal Extracts, Population Pharmacokinetics; Formulation and Evaluation of Herbal Cosmetics

 

            The college has sophisticated research facilities viz, Walk-in cold room, Animal House, Animal and plant cell culture lab, CAAD lab and has equipment viz., Zetasizer, HPLCs, GC, HPTLC, CHN Analyzer (Elementar), Auto Analyzer for biochemicals, DSC, FTIR, Gel Documentation System etc.

            The faculty of Pharmacy have been sanctioned the Research Projects from various National / International agencies such as IFS, Sweden, DAAD, UGC, DST, DBT, AICTE, ICMR, APCOST, etc. Further several Pharmaceutical industry also sanctioned project grants based on the commercial nature for product development.

 

            The college was identified by the UGC under the DRS-SAP Phase – I and Phase II programmes were over and sanctioned Rs. 46.60 lakhs in Phase – II and the DST has sanctioned an assistance of Rs. 32.00 lakhs under the FIST.  Currently UGC, SAP, DRS, Phase – III is in progress with a sanction of 70.75 lakhs.  Currently  college has also developed Electronic Data Access Lab with Internet facility for the benefit of the students and the faculty.

           The college has organized two International Conferences and a large number of National Conferences / Seminars sponsored by AICTE / UGC / DST etc and other funding agencies.

           The department acted as National Nodal Centre for Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) of AICTE and contributes for the teacher training by organizing short term programmes from the last 18 years.

                                                        

         The college organized Silver Jubilee celebrations of Department in 1999-2000 and organized Pharma Exhibition to popularize Pharmacy profession and honored ten (10) senior Teachers.

            Several of the Alumni were placed in prestigious institutions around the world. Many of them are working in regulatory bodies like US-FDA, faculty in US universities, viz., Texas Medical School of Pharmacy, South Pacific University in USA etc.  Some of them established US-FDA approved manufacturing units in various countries viz.,  Recon Therapeutics, New Jersey USA.  In India a number of Alumni members established units and to name:  Leads (India) Limited, V.V. Med Laboratories, Neuheit Pharma Technologies Pvt. Ltd. etc.

            Pharma Alumni association was started in 1984 and spread activities all over world.  In Hyderabad, KUPAH and US chapter have been conducting different programmes and kept the network of old students.  This association motivated old students to donate funds to for development of college.       

            Prof. K.V. Basivi Reddy memorial Pharma Alumni Block, Consisting a Seminar Hall, Air-condition (A/C) Auditorium, four class rooms  & a guest house is available and is  part of institution.
